Outside of the Lines

When I was a kid, Mom had a secret stash of coloring books for me. Every now and then she’d give me one. It was as exciting as Christmas to open the bland, black and white picture and make it come to life.

I was one of those kids who neatly colored in the lines. But I couldn’t resist decorating the white spaces with doodles. You see, I’m a rule follower by nature but secretly wished to be a rebel. God is always listening.

As an adult, this weird conundrum would manifest in funny ways. For example, when I was driving five miles over the speed limit, I got pulled over.

“You blew by me. Didn’t you see me?” The policeman asked.

“If I saw you, I would have slowed down,” I said with a grin.

He was not amused, and I got a ticket for going five miles over the speed limit.

At the airport, my husband and I had switched suitcases since his suitcase was lighter than mine. He got through the checkpoint, while I was randomly selected for a suitcase check.

When they opened my bag, holding men’s clothing and a big pair of shoes inside.

The guard looked at me with a suspicious glare. “Why do you have this suitcase?”

I couldn’t help but grin at my predicament. Was I smiling too much?

“It’s my husband’s clothes.” I shrugged.

“And where is he?”

“He got through the checkpoint and is waiting for me.” I pointed to the crowd.

I got the frisk down at the airport.

The Universe is always listening…
